Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Knowledge of surgical procedures, techniques, and equipment required in Operating Room.
  2. Actively communicates with the OR control desk and Leadership Management for changes in the surgical schedule.
  3. Organizes, manages and edits daily preference cards for accurate supply needed for the OR case schedule.
  4. Coordinates the daily duties of the support technicians within the surgical suite.
  5. Communicates with the OR teams for case needs (equipment, sterile instrumentation, turn-over demands, patient positioning support devices, established supply par levels, specialty orders etc.).
  6. Correlates needs for on-time starts and subsequent cases; providing instrumentation, equipment and supplies that are prepared for use and functioning appropriately, therefore preventing any delays in operations/procedures which may cause complications and untoward outcomes for the patient
  7. Adheres to out dates listed on the item packaging and monitors shelf life of sterile packaged items.
  8. Oversees and ensures proper instrument handling, decontamination, cleaning, and immediate use sterilization of instruments in collaboration with SPD.
  9. Has knowledge of steam sterilizer/steris units for operation and PI documentation.
  10. Maintains and incubates biological for trays with implantable devices
  11. Coordinates with the Operating Room EDU Resource for education to ensure competencies and on-going education for the support technician associates.
  12. Supports department policy and procedures.
  13. Serves as a liaison to interdepartmental and outside vendors for loaner trays, supplies and equipment.
  14. Prepares and handles specimens and cultures according to Operating Room standards.
  15. Assures that surgeon’s needs are anticipated during the intra-operative phase
  16. Retrieves non-controlled medication (i.e., from the GHS Pharmacy, from the pneumatic tube system, etc.) and places the non-controlled medication directly in a secure area or gives the non-controlled medication directly to a licensed professional.
  17. Supports and has knowledge of unit specific policies and AORN Standards of Care.
  18. Actively participates in patient safety guidelines in the work environment (eg. Time-Out, Pre-operative Safety Checklists, etc.)
  19. Adheres to unit dress code.

Qualifications

 REQUIRED

  • High school graduate or equivalent education.
  • Graduate of a Surgical Scrub Technologist program or graduate of related associates degree program
  • Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and supply required.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Strong leadership and organization skills.
  • Five (5) years increasingly responsible clerical experience with at least one year working in a surgical support setting
  • High attention to detail.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and critical thinking skills.
  • CPR Certification required.
  • Demonstrates professional development through participation in continuing education.

 

Note: As of February 7, 2016, employees currently in the Surgical Technologist role are considered grandfathered and are therefore not required to meet the educational requirements of this job.
