Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General

  1. Assists in the ongoing development and administration of hospital and department Quality Improvement program.
  2. Regularly performs the duties and responsibilities of the Staff Registered Nurse for patients of all age groups (See Staff Registered Nurse job description).
  3. When serving as Preceptor Nurse, serves as a role model and resource to the nursing staff. Also works with the manager and Nurse Clinician to ensure a well-planned and implemented orientation and training program for new employees.  Identifies and recommends training needs of staff, and participates in developing new training programs.
  4. When serving as Charge Nurse, coordinates daily activities and distribution of work in specific area assigned. Makes shift assignments taking into account patient acuity, area staffing needs, and staff qualifications.  Initiates staffing as needed for next shift.
  5. May oversee care provided by Staff Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Unit Secretaries, Clinical Associates, and Technicians on assigned shift.
  6. Assists in directing unit activities in emergency/disaster situations, such as a fire or code blue.
  7. Assumes area management responsibilities for shift as assigned. Ensures that policies and procedures are followed on an assigned shift.  Reports issues to management.
  8. Reports pertinent information to the on‑coming Charge Nurse, Supervisor, or Manager concerning shift occurrences.
  9. Participates in the unit Quality Improvement activities.
  10. Serves as a communication liaison between staff, patients, physicians, and families.
  11. Assists Nurse Manager in control of the budget.

 

  1. Maintains familiarity with nursing care issues relating to medical problems, surgical procedures, and diagnostic studies, and technical training in use of equipment pertinent to area.
  2. Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/visitor/patient injury‑accident to Manager.
  3. Assists in the ongoing development and administration of hospital and department Quality Improvement program.

 

Surgical Services

  1. Acts as a liaison between Surgical Services and the Department of Anesthesia to coordinate the surgery schedule as well as other emergencies.
  2. May serve as a communication liaison between staff, patients, physicians, and families.
  3. Assigned to a particular service and OR Clinical Supervisor.
  4. Maintains familiarity with nursing care issues relating to medical problems, surgical procedures, and diagnostic studies, and technical training in use of equipment pertinent to area.
  5. Serves in weekend and call rotation.

 

Diabetes and Nutrition Education

  1. Manage and reconcile daily schedule in Schedule 360.
  2. Serves as a communication liaison between inpatient/outpatient locations and Operations Coordinator or Manager.
  3. Assist staff in clarifying orders with physician offices.

 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND LEADERSHIP

 

  1. Attends classes, workshops, etc., to improve clinical performance and enhance nursing knowledge base.
  2. Plans and conducts patient care conferences, and in‑services.
  3. Follows hospital/department policies and procedures regarding:
    1. Individual department certification.
    2. Dress code.
    3. In‑service offerings and staff meetings.
  4. Serves on various committees within nursing.
  5. Assists in the orientation of new personnel and students in a preceptor capacity.

 

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Other duties as assigned by supervision.

Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in skills applicable to designated area within probationary period.
  • Demonstrated ability to assume Charge Nurse responsibilities and clinical expertise in area.
  • Successful completion of a management course prior to appointment, or within six (6) months of employment.
  • Two (2) years RN experience or One (1) as a RN AND Two (2) as a LPN.
  • Two (2) years recent experience in specialty.
  • Certified in cardio‑pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). 

Radiology Services

  • Two (2) years experience involving the treatment of critical care or surgical patients or experience in radiology nursing.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), PALS Certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of cardiac arrhythmia interpretation.

Cardiac Rehab

  • Complete CCRP (Certified Cardiac Rehabilitation Professional) certification through AACVPR within 1 year of accepting position. (Cardiac Rehab only).

PREFERRED: 

  • Certification in area of specialty.
