Responsibilities

The Director of Critical Care & Cardiology Services is responsible and accountable for both the clinical quality and financial viability of the Critical Care and Cardiac service lines, which includes Diagnostic Cardiac testing sites, Cardiac Cath Labs, Electrophysiology Labs, and associated Prep and Recovery (Admit Recovery Unit) units providing procedural, intermediate, and intensive care throughout the care continuum. Provides subject matter leadership and visibility across all organizational boundaries. Responsibility includes the vision, direction, management and coordination of clinical operations throughout the continuum of care; development of business decisions; coordination and facilitation of marketing, public relations and financial results.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Operational

  1. Assumes responsibility for, through assigned department manager(s) or coordinator(s), the effective management of departments within Critical Care & Cardiology.  Evaluates daily activities and makes operational changes as necessary to improve service levels.
  2. Identifies the needs of those departments and individuals (hospital and Medical Staff) served by the assigned department and develops departmental goals and objectives and policies and procedures which meet those needs and which support and promote the accomplishment of Divi­sion and Hospital goals and the enhancement of services.
  3.  May develop and provide in‑put into hospital‑wide policies or departmental policies that impact across division lines.  Actively participates in hospital committees which address operational issues.
  4. Assumes division wide and hospital‑wide responsibilities for projects and issues as assigned by leadership.  Actively participates on hospital committees.
  5. Ensures the clinical quality and financial viability of Critical Care & Cardiology services.
  6. Implements policies and procedures established by the organization as they relate to the Department. Develops and recommends new policies necessary to enhance heart and vascular services.  
  7. Provides strategic direction for Critical Care & Cardiology services in accordance with organizational strategic priorities and is held accountable for the achievement of strategic and tactical goals and objectives.

Marketing and Planning 

  1. Makes recommendations for and evaluates strategic program development and effectiveness in conjunction with planning and marketing.
  2. Develops functional or departmental goals to support service‑line or divisional goals and objectives.
  3. Develops and implements a plan to coordinate the components of the Critical Care and Cardiology Service Lines across the continuum of care throughout the System.

Medical Staff 

  1. Works with Medical Staff on daily service issues and problem resolution.
  2. May work with Medical Staff to ensure physician involvement relative to Critical Care and Cardiology.

Fiscal Management

  1. Develops and submits for approval a departmental capital and operating budget and is account­able for the achievement of capital and operating budget objectives.  Monitors and controls departmental budget and authorizes budgeted expenditures in accordance with the approved budget and hospital fiscal policy.
  2. Analyzes and monitors financial performance through continuous monitoring of productivity measures, expenses and revenues.
  3. Provides input for annual volume projections and price adjustments and responds to market trends that affect both.
  4. Implements systems for managing staffing and scheduling according to defined targets.

Human Resources

  1. In conjunction with the Human Resources Department, determines human resource needs and develops or assists in the development of programs to maintain and improve the quality and efficiency of the assigned departments.
  2. Recruits, hires, orients and evaluates performance of Manager(s), Supervisor(s), Coordinator(s) or other assigned personnel to assure that department is staffed with individuals who reflect behavior and performance consistent with the hospital's Mission and Values statement.  Has authority to hire, terminate, and/or take other disciplinary action as may be deemed appropriate and is in accordance with hospital policy.
  3. Develops and administers a master staffing plan for assigned cost centers in conjunction with approved budget.
  4. Identifies educational and training needs of departmental staff or individual(s) impacting assigned functions and plans with other appropriate staff members for the implementation of training needs.
  5. Develops and implements strategies for employee retention and prevention of high impact staff departures.

Quality Improvement

  1. Develops and administers the departmental Quality Improvement plan for all assigned cost centers in a manner which is consistent with the hospital's Mission and Values statement. Ensures com­pliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation agencies.
  2. Assumes responsibility for the quality improvement program for the division specifically identifying structures, processes, and outcomes that need to be developed to support quality clinical care. Ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation agencies.

Communications

  1. Communicates and coordinates with the departments and services on daily operational activities as necessary to provide an efficient and quality service.  Advises System Director of problems which negatively impact or prevent the effective operation of their departments.
  2. Communicates regularly with departmental staff to keep them abreast of information, which will assist in the safe and effective performance of their jobs, and to create an understanding of hospital‑wide performance and direction.

Leadership

  1. Integrates departmental services with the hospital's primary functions.
  2. Coordinates and integrates services within department and with other departments.
  3. Develops and implements policies and procedures to guide and support the provision of services.
  4. Recommends a sufficient number of qualified and competent persons to provide care.
  5. Determines the qualifications and competence of department personnel who provide patient care services and who are not licensed independent practitioners.
  6. Continuously assesses and improves departmental performance.
  7. Maintains appropriate quality control programs.
  8. Provides for orientation, in-service training, and continuing education of all persons in the department.
  9. Recommends space and other resources needed by the department.
  10. Participates in selecting outside sources for needed services.

General Responsibilities

  1. Practices proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.  Immediately reports any mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee/patient/visitor injury‑accident to appropriate person(s).

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND LEADERSHIP

  1. Other duties as assigned by supervision.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

  1. Master’s degree in Nursing or BS degree in Nursing or related healthcare field and a minimum of five (5) years nursing experience, with at least two (2) years in a supervisory or managerial capacity; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  2. Good written and oral communication skills.
  3. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Georgia.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION PREFERRED

  1. Two (2) years clinical experience in specialty.
